Bibb was the site of Bibb’s Store and, in the 1880’s, H. G.
Hiter’s School. The store had a blacksmith shop and, from 1880 to 1903, a post
office. The store was also the site of a mill that could grind corn and other grains.
In 1926, Bibb’s Store burned.
I suspect that the mill remained in operation until 1914. In that year a
lumberyard was begun on the site by the Purcell family. In September, 1923 a rail spur
(track number 871) was built to serve the lumberyard. The
J. S. Purcell Lumber Corporation
is still in business though the spur track was removed in April, 1991.
Photo
This is a photo of Purcell Lumber. As I took this photo I was, roughly,
facing east toward Louisa. The siding split from the main behind me and ran
alongside these buildings. (November 2001 photo)
Map
This map was prepared from U.S.G.S. topological maps, C&O track charts dated 1963, C&O Side
Track Records dated 1937, a copy of the Side Track Records updated through the 1990’s, and
C&O Valuation maps, also updated through the 1990’s.
