According to McChord (1979), Massie was originally known as Shadwell and Shadwell was
known as Edgehill. The Edgehill station was torn down in 1892 and a new depot was built.
Edgehill was renamed Shadwell in 1894 and, at the same time, Shadwell was renamed Massie.
Massie once had a spur and a waiting shed. The spur was retired in March, 1923 and the waiting shed
in December of 1933. The C&O Index of Stations and Tunnels (1943, updated to 1969) listed
Massie as abandoned. On September 26, 1943, a train carrying German POWs derailed at Duke’s Curve
at Massie. Though the engineer and fireman were both killed, none of the POW’s were injured, nor did any escape.
In June of 1944, the C&O was granted the authority to discontinue the non-agency station at Massie. A 65-car passing
siding was built in Massie in September, 1945. The track alignments through the area were changed in March, 1946.

Map
This map was prepared from U.S.G.S. topological maps, C&O track charts dated 1963, C&O Side
Track Records dated 1937, a copy of the Side Track Records updated through the 1990’s, and
C&O Valuation maps, also updated through the 1990’s.
