Pendleton takes its name from a prominent local family (Hanson, 1969). A post office opened here on November 14, 1878 with James E. Jones as postmaster. In March of 2024, I received an email from Gordon Bass, the great-great-grandson of James E. Jones. Jones was both the postmaster and the station master in Pendleton and he served as station master from 1878 until 1892. He died at the station on August 13, 1892 after being struck by a train.

The 1937 Side Track Record showed an 1103' house track (track number 859) and a depot here. The depot appears to have been very similar in design to the one at Trevilian, but it was smaller and didn’t have a bay window. In March, 1942 the house track was lengthened. Pendleton was still an agency station in 1948. The C&O’s 1950 Industrial Directory listed an 18 car team track in Pendleton. It served the following industries: the T. C. Kincannon canning plant, the Walton Lumber Co. (a saw and planing mill), and Walton & Wood (a wooden box plant and feed dealer). The Pendleton agency began closing on Saturdays in 1955. Pendleton still had its house track and passenger station in 1963. The agency closed for good in 1973 and the station and platform were retired the following year. Track 859 was removed in 1978.

This is the C&O depot at Pendleton in June of 1970. Note the coal shed at the other end. It was a C&O standard that is now available in kit form. (Photo by Thomas W. Dixon, Jr. Used with permission.)

These photos were sent to me by Jerry Simonoff quite some time ago. I recently found them when looking for something else. They show the removal of track 859. He also reported that the caboose in the lower photo was marooned. I wonder whatever happened to it as don’t believe that it’s still there. (both 1997, Jerry Simonoff photos, used with permission)

Map

This map was prepared from U.S.G.S. topological maps, C&O track charts dated 1963, C&O Side Track Records dated 1937, a copy of the Side Track Records updated through the 1990’s, and C&O Valuation maps, also updated through the 1990’s.
