Holliday takes its name from a local landowner. The 1937 Side Track Record
listed a waiting shed and a 349' team track (track number 847) in Holliday. The C&O petitioned the
State Corporation Commission for authority to discontinue handling freight here in
late 1956. The shelter shed was still located along the tracks here in 1963, but was
removed soon after.
Photo
This is the waiting shelter that used to stand in Holliday. It has been moved
a short distance from its original location and the front was closed in. To the
best of my knowledge, this is the only existing example of the C&O’s
standard shelter (see the Chickahominy page
for a photo of one in service). Hundreds of these small shelters were built to
replace stations as passenger levels on the C&O declined. (2002 photo)
Maps
These maps were prepared from U.S.G.S. topological maps, C&O track charts dated 1963, C&O Side
Track Records dated 1937, a copy of the Side Track Records updated through the 1990’s, and
C&O Valuation maps, also updated through the 1990’s.
